Building an inclusive NYC

St FX is Staffing the Respite Shelter at Old First Reformed Church the Week of July 16th 2018. For the 8th year, StFX parishioners will be providing meals and overnight presence for the 10-12 men housed at the shelter at Old First Reformed Church during the week of July16th.

CAMBA, a Brooklyn-based non-profit agency that “provides services that connect people with opportunities to enhance their quality of life” (www.camba.org), transports the men to the shelter each evening and provides cots, bedding, towels and toiletries. The men (guests) set up their cots and remove linens, put cots away in the morning.

Various faith communities each volunteer for a week during  the summer to “staff” the shelter. Volunteer opportunities
include either bringing food for dinner or staying overnight. Parishioners who have volunteered in the past have described
the experience as: “easy to do, meaningful, a great way to practice (my) faith, a fun way to connect with each other and
the guests, a terrific way to offer service in our neighborhood...”

Dinner volunteers collaborate to provide a nutritious hot meal,  Set up the buffet, help with serving, set up and clean up. The
time commitment, other than the time spent cooking at home is 1 1⁄2 to 2 hours, from 6:00 to 6:30 PM arrival until clean-up
is accomplished between 7:30 and 8:00 PM.

Overnight volunteers arrive around 7:00 PM, eat dinner with the other volunteers and guests and then oversee “lights out”
around 10:00 PM. Volunteers sleep in a separate (air conditioned) space from the shelter guests. Lights go back on at 5:00 AM. Overnight volunteers prepare a pot of coffee. CAMBA transportation arrives to pick up the shelter guests between 5:30 and 6:00 AM. Once the guests have left, the overnight volunteers go home.

We need approximately 25 of you to volunteer for these opportunities. Families are welcome.
Please email Regie Hawkey to volunteer or with any questions you might have.
